Unable to generate story ideas?
Stuck in the middle of a story and unsure of how to progress it?
Then maybe it is time to P.A.N.I.C!
Peace Of Mind
Write down all your worries on a sheet of paper under the headline Tomorrow’s Problems and put it away. Then take some time to meditate, listen to music, do yoga – whatever it is that helps you relax.
Alone Time
Make sure you are alone with no distractions. Turn off your phone and PC.
Nothing To Do
When you have nothing to do (and all day to do it), and no worries, your mind gets out of problem solving mode, and into creative mode.
Idea Generation
Maybe your mind spits out get-rich-quick schemes, an app for finding the best cup of coffee, or you start daydreaming about curing cancer. Whatever it produces, write it down. Do not edit or censor yourself.
Creation
At the end of the day you will have several ideas on paper.
‘Find natural remedy for getting rid of cockroaches’, ‘What’s the difference between green coffee and black coffee?’ and ‘Ways to cure colon cancer’ may sound like normal everyday brain junk, but there could be a story in there.
‘Owner of a roach infested motel seeks to get rid off their roach problem using a natural remedy containing green coffee. A customer accidentally ingests the concoction which cures their colon cancer. Motel owner wins Nobel Prize.’
So, the next time you get writer’s block, remember that it is OK to P.A.N.I.C!
P – Peace of mind
A – Alone time
N – Nothing to do
I – Idea generation
C – Creation
