A few years back I was watching “The Source”, a documentary about the Beats. At some point during this documentary my brain started tingling. Ideas began to form, and the basic plot of what would later become “The Pool“ was written while I was watching it. I just watched it again now, and I can not point to anything specific in the documentary itself that would spawn these ideas.
However, what the Beats did was reject the prepackaged – no need to think about it – already chewed – swallow it whole – conformist way of life, in favour of a ‘figure it out as you go’ lifestyle of exploration and experimentation.
Takuma, the main character in “The Pool“, is also trying to escape the conformist rut (albeit in a very drastic way). But he is lost in the desert, has no idea of what direction he should be heading in and is unsure of what is real or not. I think a lot of people can relate to that.
I know I could when I first began writing the story.
(P.S. If you are at that point right now, feeling lost and unsure of what direction you should be heading in, the video below is for you. Good luck.)
